A Conversation with...Nancy Nix '96

CSI Alumni@Large
: What is your fondest memory of CSI?
Nancy Nix : My fondest memory of CSI is drinking hot tea in the Sunnyside cafeteria during a break.  I'd always run into a friend there or make a new one
.

CSIA @ L
: On which campus did you attend your classes?
NN: I attended most classes at Sunnyside, but did take a class or two at St George.  During my last two years the new campus opened.

CSIA @ L: If you had your CSI education to do over again, what would you do differently?
NN: If I had my CSI experience to do again, I think that I would become more active in student activities

CSIA @ L: What is your major?
NN: I majored in Finance, with a minor in Economics.

CSIA @ L: In your opinion, what was the best aspect of your CSI experience?
NN: I attended night school, and I worked full time.  Therefore, I did not have a traditional college experience, but the best aspect was my fellow students.  So many of us were in the same boat, and we really helped each other out.  They say "it takes one to know one" and in this case we really got to know one another!

CSIA @ L: Who was your favorite professor?
NN: Looking back, I think that I would say Prof. Block was one of my favorites.  He was an Economics teacher, and would always put an interesting spin on the subject.

CSIA @ L: What was the best piece of advice you received?
NN: I always remember this advise from one of my Finance professors who said:  "look beyond the numbers", take time to find out what the company is about - and just what is behind those numbers.

CSIA @ L: How did CSI prepare you for your current position?
NN: Currently, I own and operate my own business.  My experience at CSI showed me that with perseverance and hard work you can accomplish anything.  While I was working on my BS I had to sacrifice a lot of weekends and vacations for papers or studying and sometimes I felt as though I'd never finish.  But I did.  Now, with my business it's sort of the same.  The more I put into it, the more I get out of it.

CSIA @ L: What is the best part of your job?
NN: Currently, I own and operate my own Embroidery Business; "Wicked Stitches Embroidery" (www.sewmuchtosay.com).  Mostly my work consists of doing custom logo or custom personalization jobs.  Our business is small by comparison but it works for me and my business partner.  Both of us try to balance a work/family life and with young kids you really need a flexible work schedule.  Thankfully I'm able to be creative with my work!  I've had the opportunity to work with some small businesses on Staten Island and hope to work with more as my business grows.

CSIA @ L: What do you do when you are not working?
NN: When I'm not working I enjoy being with my family.  I love to bake and read and recently have taken up jogging.  Still on the fence with the jogging....

CSIA @ L: What was the last movie you saw?
NN: The last movie I saw was Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 "the Squeakquel"...young kids!

CSIA @ L: What was the last book you read?
NN: I just finished Blood for Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani, I really loved the story.  This was the first book I've read about ancient Persia.

CSIA @ L: What is your favorite quote?
NN: My favorite quote is " whether you think you can or can't, you're    right" Henry Ford.

My husband and I are married for 18 years.  We're both native Staten Islanders, and currently live in West Brighton.  We have two children, ages 12 and 8.  We enjoy spending time with our kids and extended family, of which we have many!   Luckily our family is close by.
